Deven walked into the hospital in September thinking something was wrong with his legs, never imagining how much his life was about to change. He was a high school senior, supposed to be worrying about classes, friends, and what came after graduation—not why it was suddenly hard to walk. Within two days, everything shifted. The diagnosis of leukemia came fast and hard, leaving little time to process what was happening before treatment plans and medical terms took over his world.
Hearing that he was not in remission made the news even heavier. The future that once felt predictable was suddenly filled with uncertainty, hospital rooms, and long days that blurred together. While his classmates continued with football games, prom plans, and college applications, Deven found himself fighting a battle no teenager should have to face. The physical impact was obvious, but the emotional weight was just as real and often harder to talk about.
The toll on his mental health has been significant. Fear, frustration, and grief for the life he expected come and go in waves, sometimes stronger than the physical pain. Being so young and forced to confront something this serious can feel isolating, even with support around him. Yet within that struggle, Deven’s story is also one of resilience—of a young person learning how to hold onto hope while navigating a reality that arrived far too soon.
