Landon's Journey

I thought I was taking Landon for a silly doctor appointment for a tweaked knee because of flat shoes. I mentioned to the doctor that I wanted to rule out other “scary stuff” because I knew people who had thought leg pain was nothing but it ended up being something way scarier. I am so thankful that our pediatrician listened and took me seriously. It turns out his tweaked knee was High Grade Conventional Osteosarcoma.

Two hours after getting the x-ray diagnosis we were in the oncologist office talking about treatment options and where to go from here. Two hours. That is unheard of these days but our pediatrician pushed and advocated for our little boy.

Landon had a PET scan, CT scan, open biopsy of the tumor and port-a-cath placement all on the same day.

Chemo started a week later. He receives 3 chemo medications. He will be in treatment for at least 30 weeks before setbacks, which we told he would have. The setbacks could be labs not looking good enough from the chemo side effects for them to continue chemo, him needing a transfusion (blood or platelet), a big drop in his white count or an illness causing fevers. Fevers in a chemo patient are a medical emergency.

His chemo regimen is intense. He gets 2 chemo meds that make him very nauseous and sick and make his white count drop to almost nothing. This medication requires him to have 2 weeks off after he gets it so that his body can recover some because of everything it takes out of him. Then he goes in for another chemo and he has to stay in the hospital until his body clears it out to a safe level. All of his chemo treatments are inpatient. We are lucky if we get 3 days home between treatments. If we are not admitted then we are in clinic at least once if not twice a week.

He is so brave and takes everything in stride. Through everything he has had such a positive attitude and has shown us just how strong and brave he can be.
