Corey's Story
Four months before Corey was diagnosed he had pain in his hip and leg. We took him to his doctors 3 times and were told at his age it's growing pains. Give him heat and ibuprofen for the pain. October 5th we left for the beach for a family get away. Everything seemed to be going well. An 8 hour drive and a full week away with all our family on Dads side.
The 9th through 12th Corey was unable to bear any weight due to extreme pain, and he developed a small knot under the upper femur. We called his doctor's office to let them know what was going on. They told us it wasn't life threatening at the time, and we could wait until the 13th to bring him to our local ER to see what was going on. We discussed it with Corey and he chose to wait since it was vacation. Secretly I'm happy we waited. Being so far away from home and being told your child has cancer would have been even worse.
At the ER Corey had xrays, bloodwork, and more xrays. An Oncologist came to Corey's ER room to tell his Dad Corey had bone cancer. I got a text from my husband to get to the ER fast. The Oncologist came back in to talk to us about what would be done within the next few days ... Pet Scans, bloodwork, CT scans, MRIs. Corey was placed on a MAP plan for his chemo on October 30, 2019 and was diagnosed with Metastatic Osteosarcoma. He had surgery to place a port and his first chemo treatment the same day.
On January 15, 2020 Corey had a BIG surgery to remove the primary tumor to the femur. They ended up taking the entire femur, hip, and did a partial knee replacement. They called the surgery Mega Prosthetic Limb Salvage Surgery. What a big name to just say they are trying to save his leg. On June 2nd Corey completed 30 rounds of chemo and will have a full body scan on July 16th to see what his next plan is. We are praying God healed him and no cancer can be seen.
Currently Corey has physical therapy 3 days a week to help recover his leg and to help gain some strength back. He can bear zero weight and walks with crutches at all times. Corey always has a smile on his face no matter what. It truly has helped the family during this time.
