Alayna's Story
In September 2015 a polyp showed up in Alayna's nostril. It was completely blocking air from getting through. We took her to her pediatrician and tried nasal steroid spray for a week to see if that would shrink the polyp. It didn't work. We were referred to an ENT. He prescribed a high dose of oral steroids to see if that would work. It didn't. Surgery was scheduled to remove the polyp and open her left sinus cavity. While in surgery the polyp was bleeding more than a normal polyp would have been expected to bleed. The doctor took out enough to open her nostril and for a biopsy. The biopsy results came back as cancerous. The sample was sent to the Mayo Clinic for further testing. Her CAT scan results were sent to MUSC.
The following week we took Alayna to MUSC in Charleston, SC for an MRI and PET scan and to see a radiologist and oncologist. On December 15, 2015 we were given the diagnosis of Ewing's Sarcoma. Alayna's journey to beat cancer was just beginning.
UPDATE: Alayna completed treatment in December 2016 and her port was removed in January. She will continue to be monitored and have periodic scans.
