Luca's Story
On April 17, 2019 I took Luca to his pediatrician after noticing some bumps behind his ears. I thought maybe it was allergies because in the weeks prior he was constantly sneezing and showing sighs of a head cold. After blood work showed no signs of infection, the doctor requested that we take Luca to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles for additional tests. On April 23rd we walked in not knowing our lives would forever be changed. After blood work, X-rays and an ultrasound Luca was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
Treatment was started right away, and Luca spent 6 days in the hospital getting a pic line put in, and having a lumbar puncture and bone marrow aspiration. There was lots of blood work and the beginning of the chemo meds that will help cure him. We found out this will be a 2 to 3 year battle, and we were trying to figure out how to adjust. The whole time Luca was taking it like a champ.
We are now coming to the end of induction phase. There will still be weekly clinic visits, dressing changes, two more lumbar punctures, and two more bone marrow aspirations done. Luca had been losing hair little by little. First we did a short haircut, but finally shaved the rest off. He has had two blood transfusions, and possibly will need another tomorrow. We're waiting to get good news on how treatment has helped, and moving on to the next stage in treatment.
"Thank you so much. Luca loves his quilt. He’s already taken it to clinic appointments. Thanks to all who took time to hand make this beautiful gift."
