Luke's Story
Luke was your All-American boy. He loved watching football, and had been playing baseball since he was 4 years old. He could pitch or play first and third. He had been chosen for all stars every year except one. In 2016 he was chosen again, but a week into practice he started complaining of being dizzy.
We took him to our local ER where they did a scan of his head. We were thinking it was a head cold or ear infection. When the report came back it showed Luke had two tumors in the back of his brain. Our worlds changed completely at that moment. He was rushed to Children's Hospital in Birmingham. They confirmed what we were dreading.
Luke stayed in the hospital over the weekend and had surgery on Monday. When the surgery was completed the doctor came out very grim. The diagnosis was the worst we could receive. We were paralyzed with fear and disbelief. Luke had radiation and 4 more surgeries.
In July 2017 there was more bad news. The Glioblastoma had come back in the midbrain. Luke was now considered to be in Stage 4. He received the equivalent of 6 weeks of radiation in 10 days. The treatments have caused him to have left-sided weakness and issues with his eyesight and hearing. But Luke is still determined to get his strength back and play ball again.
